UJ@20 A JOURNEY OF GROWTH,BELONGING AND BECOMING

INRODUCTION

As the University of Johannesburg (UJ) celebrates its 20th anniversary, l find myself reflecting on my own journey and transformation as a student here.UJ's milestones, achievements and unwavering commitment to academic excellence and diversity have shaped not only the institution but my personal growth also. From overcoming academic challenges to embracing the rich cultural diversity around me, my time at UJ have been an exciting blend of learning, discovery and self-growth. This reflection is not just about celebrating UJ's achievements hence it's about sharing how it has shaped me both academically and personally.

FINDING A HOME AT UJ AND CHALLENGES FACED

When l first stepped onto the University of Johannesburg campus in 2024, l was filled with a mix of excitement and nervousness. Everything was new the huge lecture halls, the bustling walkways and the diverse faces all around me. Starting my first year in Public Relations and Communication program was both exciting and challenging. I was stepping into a new world, filled with fresh opportunities but also uncertainty. Like many first -years, l faced the pressure of adjusting to university life, managing assignments and finding my place in a new environment. There was a time l doubted myself wondering if l was capable of managing it all. But slowly, UJ began to feel like a home. The support systems here made a huge difference, friendly lectures who were always willing to help, peers who shared advice and encouragement and various student groups where l could connect with others who understood what l was going through. Learning to navigate academic expectations while also embracing the campus culture wasn't easy, but each challenge became an opportunity to grow stronger and more confident. Despite the difficulties, lam proud to say l passed all my modules in my first year, a result of hard work, determination and the incredible support from my lecturers and friend.

MOMENTS OF UNITY: THE RUGBY MATCH EXPERIENCE

One of the most memorable experiences of my time so far at UJ was attending a rugby match between UJ and the Western Cape. The stadium buzzed with energy, and the crowd was filled with students proudly wearing orange and cheering passionately. The atmosphere was electric, chants, songs and the rhythmic beating of drums created a sense of unity among everyone's presence. lt wasn't just a game hence it was a celebration of school spirit and community. Watching the players give their all in the field inspired me.Their determination, teamwork and resilience reflected the same qualities we students strive for in our academic and personal lives. The thrill of the game, the roar of the crowd with every try scored and the shared excitement made me realise how important such events are for building a sense of belonging. This game brought students from all faculties and backgrounds together, breaking down barriers and fostering friendships That day, l truly felt part of something bigger, a spirit of unity, pride and resilience that defines the UJ community. This reminded me that university life is not just about academics, hence it's about building connections, creating memories and embracing a sense of belonging. 

LIFE IN RESIDENCE: GROWTH BEYOND CLASSROOM

Another major part of my UJ experience has been residence life. Living in residence has been one of the most transformative parts of my university journey. It provided me with more than just a place to stay. Living on campus exposed me to different cultures, personalities and a whole new level of independence. l was introduced to students from various cultural and socio-economic backgrounds, enriching my understanding of the World and encouraging me to develop empathy and open- mindedness. Through everyday interactions, shared meals and late-night sessions, l formed bonds that went beyond academics, together as a house we became a support system to each other. One of my highlights of my res experience was participating in res culture activities and playing netball for my house. This did not only keep me physically active but also helped me build my teamwork and leadership skills. Being part of a team taught me how to collaborate, trust each other and stay resilient in both victory and defeat. The sense of unity during matches and the encouragement from fellow housemates made me feel proud to represent my residence. These experiences have complemented my classroom learning by shaping my character, sharpening my interpersonal skills and helping me develop a well-rounded sense of self. In many ways, life in residence has been a classroom of its own, teaching me lessons that no textbook ever could.   

A COMMUNITY WITHIN A COMMUNITY (ZIMSOC)

One of the most meaningful parts of my journey at UJ has been finding a home within ZIMSOC, the Zimbabwean Students Society. In a university as large and diverse as UJ, it's easy to feel lost at first but ZIMSOC became my stabiliser, a community within a community where l truly felt understood, supported and celebrated. Being part of this society allowed me to stay connected to my roots while embracing my new environment. Being a Zimbabwean student, l joined the Zimbabwean student society at UJ (ZIMSOC). Through this community l found friendship and a space to express my identity. Whether we were attending braais, playing games or simply catching up

 after lecturers,ZIMSOC gave me the comfort of home and the joy of cultural exchange. It's groups like these that makes UJ truly inclusive. A place where every student can thrive and feel seen no matter where they come from.

CELEBRATING HERITAGE AND DIVERSITY AT UJ

One of the most enriching aspects of my journey at the university of Johannesburg has been experiencing the vibrant celebration of heritage and diversity that defines the Universities culture. UJ takes pride in being a melting pot of backgrounds, languages and traditions. ln 2024 during my first year UJ hosted a heritage function ,cultural exhibition and themed events, students from across the world united to share their traditions,cruisines and performances creating a rich tapestry of cultures,  that not only celebrated our differences but also promote mutual respect and understanding This event was more than just a gathering hence it was a platform for storytelling ,cultural expression and unity.Additionally,UJ's focus on celebrating our diverse heritage has played a significant role in shaping my student experience. The University regularly hosts functions that celebrate the rich cultural backgrounds of its students, allowing me to learn about different traditions while also proudly sharing my own. These heritage events have deepened my understanding of community, solidarity and, providing an inclusive space where everyone's identity is honored. I have participated in some of these functions, and it's been a rewarding experience to be part of a university that values its diverse student body and actively promotes the celebration of our individual culture.

UJ'S IMPACT ON MY GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT

The University of Johannesburg has played a transformative role in shaping both my academic and personal journey. Academically, Public Relations program has pushed me to explore new ideas, express myself confidently and equip me with important skills in communication, critical thinking and innovation, while inspiring me to strive for excellence and work toward graduating with distinctions. I have learned that communication is not just about speaking well hence it's about connecting with people, telling powerful stories and building meaningful relations. These are the lessons that l carry with me every day, not just in class but in how l interact with the world around me. On a personal level, UJ has given me a strong sense of belonging, helped me grow in confidence and allowed me to embrace my cultural identity through communities like ZIMSOC and various heritage events. Living on campus further enhanced my independence, leadership and social connections through sports and residence activities University events fostered a deep sense of unity and pride. On the whole, UJ have shaped me into a confident, ambitious and culturally aware individual, ready to make a positive impact in the World.

UJ'S IMPACT ON COMMUNITY EMPOWERMENT AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) contributes to community and social development through education, research and active community engagement. It offers accessible higher education and support services to students from disadvantaged backgrounds, helping to break the cycle of poverty. UJ also runs community outreach programs, including skills development, entrepreneurship training and health awareness campaigns that uplift local residents. Through its Centre for Social Development in Africa (CSDA), the university conducts research that informs public policy on issues such as inequality, poverty and social welfare. By integrating academic knowledge with real world challenges, UJ empowers communities, promotes social justice and helps build a more inclusive and sustainable society  

FUELING AMBITIONS, INSPIRING CHANGE

Looking ahead lam aiming to pass my degree with distinctions and continue building a career in public relations that makes a real difference. The University of Johannesburg has laid the foundation for that dream and lam grateful for the opportunities it offers to students, whether through practical learning, access to technology, residence support or community engagement. One day l hope to give back to the UJ community through mentorship by sharing my journey and supporting future students just as l have been supported.

HOPES FOR THE FUTURE OF UJ

I hope to see the University of Johannesburg continue its journey as a dynamic institution that leads through academic excellence, innovation and social impact. As it strengthens its global reputation, l picture UJ remaining deeply committed to addressing local challenge and contributing meaningfully to South African society. My hope is for a more inclusive and accessible campuses that empower students from all backgrounds to flourish. I also see UJ embracing sustainability and future focused education, equipping graduates to guide and shape an evolving World. Above all l believe that the University of Johannesburg can be a transformative force in the lives of its students and the community it serves.

As the university of Johannesburg celebrates 20 years of excellence and growth, this milestone is more than just a number, it's a celebration of transformation, resilience and the journey of becoming. l celebrate with it, the friendships that l have made, the lessons that l have learnt and the person lam becoming. Over two decades UJ has evolved into a vibrant hub of learning, innovation and social impact, shaping leaders who are ready to meet the the challenges of today and tomorrow.  Here l have grown not just as a student but as a communicator, a dreamer and a young professional ready to take on the world.
